Looking for Alaska by John Green.
“In the dark beside me, she smelled of sweat and sunshine and vanilla and on that thin-mooned night I could see little more than her silhouette, but even in the dark, I could see her eyes – fierce emeralds. And not just beautiful, but hot too.”
"BEFORE. Miles Halter’s whole life has been one big non-event until he starts at anything-but-boring Culver Creek Boarding School and meets Alaska Young. Gorgeous, clever, funny, sexy, screwed up and utterly fascinating she pulls Miles into her world, launches him into a new life, and steals his heart. But when tragedy strikes, and Miles comes face-to-face with death he discovers the value of living and loving unconditionally.
AFTER: Nothing will ever be the same."
I decided to read this book after I had it suggested to me by a friend, she raved about this author so I decided to buy two of his books on a buy one get one half price offer.
But when I started reading it I never felt myself getting gripped by the story, when I did put the book down I didn't feel repelled to pick it back up and read it again, it took me 3 days to finish this book and all the way through I struggled to keep my mind on the book.
The plot is quite simple, it is set into two parts, BEFORE and AFTER an event that changes the characters lives. Floridian Miles has decided to attending boarding school in Alabama, he is looking for a 'Great Perhaps' (ala 'I go to seek a Great Perhaps' by Francois Rabelais) and he's never going to get that at his present school, friendless, alone and pretty miserable. Miles is soon christened as 'Pudge' (on account of him being so skinny, rather ironic, huh?) by his room mate the Colonel and is introduced to the heroine of the story, and its name sake - Alaska. Miles soon becomes besotted with the vibrant, bubbly, unpredictable Alaska, even though she tells us frequently that she's majorly in love with her boyfriend.
Even though the book has its good points it wasn't good enough to keep me entertained for long so I'm going to give this book a 3.5* review!
